The act would create a new Cabinet-level department and abolish ICE and Border Patrol.
Congresswoman Delia Ramirez of Illinois introduced the Reimagining Safety Act last month to abolish U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Border Patrol. It would also dismantle the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and establish a Cabinet “Department of Community Safety.”
Other proposed changes include shifting the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the U.S. Coast Guard under the Department of Transportation, while the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency would move to the newly created department.
The legislation has been co-sponsored by Representatives Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Adelita Grijalva of Arizona, and Jim McGovern of Massachusetts.
